Robin Day(1915-2010), Furniture and interior designer
Sitter in 4 portraits
Robin Day and Lucienne Day trained and met at the Royal College of Art. They married in 1942 and have become the most celebrated British design couple of the postwar era. The Days played a starring role at the 1951 Festival of Britain: Robin designed the furniture for the new Royal Festival Hall and Heals launched Lucienne's Calyx fabric design to mark the event. From 1948 Robin Day was commissioned to design furniture for the British manufacturer Hille. His 1963 Polypropylene chair embodied his belief in low cost, mass-produced, functional design. Between 1962 and 1987 the Days were consultants to the John Lewis Partnership, developing a new house style and store interiors.
