Guyanese-British musician who, after completing half of his schooling in Guyana, emigrated in 1960 to join his parents who were already living and working in London. Influenced into a musical career after seeing Chuck Berry play live at the Astoria, Finsbury Park, he scored his own hit with "Baby Come Back" in 1968. He immortalised Brixton's famous Electric Avenue with a song of the same name. The song was inspired by the 1981 Brixton riots, it became a huge hit in the UK and US. In 2008 he performed at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday concert. He received a lifetime achievement award from the government of Guyana in 2016.
