David Charles Henshaw Austin

(1926-2018), Farmer and rose nurseryman

Sitter in 1 portrait
David Austin is a rose breeder, specialist grower and author. His first rose, the fragrant Constance Spry, was released in 1963. Since then he has released nearly two hundred English roses. Austin is the son of a farmer and worked as a farmer himself before going into business as a nurseryman and plant breeder. His aim was to create new roses by combining the charm and fragrance of old roses with the wide colour range and repeat-flowering qualities of modern roses. Austin started David Austin Roses in 1969. The David Austin nursery in Shropshire now runs one of the largest rose breeding programmes in the world.
