My grandfather was head Gamekeeper at Great Saxham Hall, near Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk where Sir Christopher and Lady Winifred Magnay lived. He was John Augustus Watts and was from a long line of gamekeepers who worked at Ickworth Park and Great Saxham Estates.
I visited Great Saxham, for the first time since migrating to Australia in 1948 with my parents, in 1959 and met Sir Christopher and Lady Magnay at The Hall. They invited my mother and I inside, as my mother grew up on the Estate and remembered The Hall and the fabulous Christmas Parties they put on for their workers every year. My mother Pamela Violet Black (nee Watts) was born at Park Cottage the octagonal gamekeepers' cottage in the middle of the meadow, now called 'Grandfathers.' She was baptised, confirmed and married in St Andrews CofE Great Saxham, I was also christened in the font too. I have since visited Great Saxham over the years and have met the subsequent owners of Great Saxham Hall. It has been a great joy to walk in my mother's footsteps.

Lady Magnay - presumably his wife - lived Milford on Sea, Hants, circa 1940s. My uncle, John Golledge, rented one of her fields for corn harvest. I think she lived in the Mill House from which Milford gets its name
