Joan Holton (or Houlton) Salter, the second daughter of Stephen Salter FRIBA was born October-December 1901 at Oxford (England and Wales Births) and was recorded as aged 9 in the 1911 Census. In 1924 she secretly married at Isleworth Registry Office Chandos Sydney Cedric Brudenell-Bruce, Lord Cardigan when he was an undergraduate at Oxford, and aged 20, It was presumably at this time that she revised her age downwards by four years in order to appear younger than her husband.
Joan Holton, Lady Cardigan died on Saturday 24 July 1937, having jumped from a seventh floor window of the Savoy Hotel. At the time Chandos Sydney Cedric Brudenell-Bruce, was still Lord Cardigan, having not yet inherited the title of 7th Marquess of Ailesbury. Images are therefore of the Countess of Cardigan.
