Queen Emma of Hawaii
(1836-1885), Christian ruler; wife of King Kamehameha IV of HawaiiSitter in 3 portraits
Queen consort of King Kamehameha IV from 1856 to his death in 1863. Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV petitioned the Church of England to help establish the Church of Hawaii and founded St. Andrew's Cathedral, raising their own funds for the building. In 1858 the couple had their first and only child Prince Albert.. Queen Victoria agreed to become godmother to the child, and in 1862 she sent an ornate silver christening cup as special gift but before the cup could arrive, the prince fell ill and eventually died on 27 August 1862. Queen Emma, still coming to terms with the loss of her child, lost her husband the following year. After the death of her husband she ran against in the constitutionally-mandated royal election claiming that her husband had wanted her to succeed him but died before any public proclamation could be made however, she did not win.
