Alexander McQueen grew up in London's East End and studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College. Fashion journalist Isabella Blow purchased the young designer's entire postgraduate collection following his 1992 degree show and her support proved to be instrumental for McQueen. In 1996 he was appointed head designer at Givenchy and was named Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards four times during his time with the couturiers. As head of his own label, McQueen was awarded International Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (2003).
