First came to prominence in the BBC television series Ever Decreasing Circles playing opposite Richard Briers. Films include Clockwise (1986), Cry Freedom (1987), as the wife of Donald Woods, Carrington (1995) as Lady Ottoline Morrell and Iris (2001) as photographer Janet Stone. She has also appeared in Calendar Girls (2003), Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Pride and Prejudice (2005). She received critical acclaim for her performance in Lorca's The House of Bernada Alba at the National Theatre (2005). Awarded an OBE in the Queen's 2004 New Year's Honours List for her services to drama.
