Geologist. Professor of Geochemistry at the School of Earth Sciences, Birkbeck College, teaching petrology and the evolution of the earth. Downes is a Fellow of the Geological Society and a Chartered Geologist. With European colleagues Downes is a founding member of 'Europrobe', an international multidisciplinary project that involves the origin and evolution of the earth's crust. 'Geology covers aspects of all sciences' 'My research concerns the Earth's continental lithosphere - the outer rigid shell of the planet.'
