Dame Julia Stretton Higgins

Chemical Engineer. Began career as a physics teacher before taking a post as research fellow in the department of Chemistry at the University at Manchester (1968-72). Worked in Grenoble, France for three years before joining Imperial College, London in 1976 becoming Professor of Polymer Science in the Department of Chemical Engineering in 1989 and Director of the Graduate School in Engineering and Physical Sciences in 2002. She is Vice President and Foreign Secretary of the Royal Society. Created a Dame in 2001. 'I am interested in how the very long molecules which make up plastics and rubbers get organised in materials we use and how this organisation and re-organisation determines their special properties'.
