Astrophysicist, Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, President of the Royal Society (2005-10) and Director of the Institute of Astronomy (1977-82, 1987-91). Baron Rees pursued an academic career in cosmology in the Britain and the United States and is one of the world’s leading authorities on the big bang theory and related topics. Astronomer Royal since 1995 and served as President of the Royal Society from 2005 until 2010. His research interests include 'extreme' cosmic phenomena, black holes, cosmic structure formation and 'dark matter', and he is interested in both scientific and philosophical aspects of cosmology. Publications include Before the Beginning (1997) and Our Final Century (2003). In 2004, Rees won the Michael Faraday Prize for excellence in communicating science.
