Astrophysicist, Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, President of the Royal Society (2005-10) and Director of the Institute of Astronomy (1977-82, 1987-91). Astronomer Royal since 1995. His research interests include 'extreme' cosmic phenomena, black holes, cosmic structure formation and 'dark matter', and he is interested in both scientific and philosophical aspects of cosmology. Publications include Before the Beginning (1997) and Our Final Century (2003). In 2004, Rees won the Michael Faraday Prize for excellence in communicating science.
