Born in North Carolina, Ava Gardner first came to prominence after her performance in The Killers (1946) in which she co-starred with fellow newcomer Burt Lancaster, and her appearance the following year in The Hucksters. Acclaimed roles include John Ford's Mogambo (1953), Joseph L. Mankiewicz's The Barefoot Contessa (1954) and John Huston's The Night of the Iguana (1964). Her first two marriages were to Mickey Rooney and Artie Shaw and third marriage was to Frank Sinatra.
