Sir Kenneth Charles Branagh

(1960-), Actor and director

Irish-born Branagh trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London (of which he became President in 2015), joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1984. He has directed and starred in many film adaptations of Shakespeare, including Much Ado About Nothing (1993) and As You Like It (2006), as well as blockbuster films such as Thor (2011). Other films include Frankenstein (1994) and My Week with Marilyn (2011). Branagh directed a season of plays at the Garrick Theatre in 2015-16 including Romeo and Juliet and John Osborne’s The Entertainer. He has been nominated for many Academy Awards and Golden Globes and won several BAFTA Awards. He was knighted in 2012 and in 2017 received the Freedom of Belfast award.
