George Dalziel

(1815-1902), Wood-engraver and illustrator; founder and leader of the 'Dalziel Brothers' firm; brother of Edward Dalziel

Sitter in 4 portraits
Draughtsman and wood-engraver, George Dalziel was the Brothers Dalziel firm's most senior member. After moving to London aged nineteen and studying under the wood-engraver Charles Gray for four years, he established what was to become the family engraving firm. His early work included commissions from Ebenezer Landells for Punch and the Illustrated London News. In 1901, he published the family's memoirs The Brothers Dalziel: A Record, co-written with his brother Edward. An anecdotal history of their working relationships with many of the great illustrators, publishers and authors, it helped to cement their position amongst them and secure the firm's future reputation.
