Political scientist and anthropologist. Chilver began her career as a journalist in 1937, working for the Daily News (1945-7). From 1948 to 1957 she worked for the Colonial Office. She held the post of Principal at Bedford College, University of London (1964-71) and subsequently at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford (1971-9). Chilver authored numerous articles on African historical subjects and edited the book Cameroon's Tycoon: Max Esser's Expedition and Its Consequences (with U. Röshenthaler), published in 2001.
