Elizabeth Jane Howard
(1923-2014), NovelistSitter in 18 portraits
Howard began her writing career with The Beautiful Visit in 1950 and was awarded the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize for her first novel. Shortly afterwards, she collaborated with the writer Robert Aickman on the collection of short stories We Are for the Dark in 1951. Howard is best known for her critically acclaimed semi-autobiographical series The Cazelet Chronicles, which explore three generations of an English family between 1937-1947. The books were made into a popular BBC adaptation in 2001 and a Radio 4 series in 2012. In 1942 Howard married the naturalist Peter Scott and later married the author Kingsley Amis. In her own lifetime, Howard's writing was somewhat overshadowed by her personal relationships.
