Columnist, editor and 'Agony Aunt'. Following her graduation from Newnham College, Cambridge, Whitehorn was a publisher's reader (1950-53). She subsequently worked as a journalist for Picture Post (1956-7), Woman's Own (1958) and The Spectator (1959-61). As columnist for the Observer from 1960 to 1996, Whitehorn became known for her wit, humour and observance of the lives of women. Her book Cooking in a Bedsitter (1961) remained in print for over thirty years. In 1997 she became the 'Agony Aunt' at Saga magazine. She was appointed CBE in the 2014 New Year Honours for services to journalism.
