At 26 Rickman won a scholarship to RADA, where he received a number of awards. He came to prominence on stage in Les Liasons Dangereuses (1985) and made his first major film appearance in Die Hard (1988). Since then he has appeared in numerous films and plays including Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), for which he won a BAFTA, Sense and Sensibility (1995) with Emma Thompson and Private Lives (2002). He was recognisable to younger generations as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series of films. Rickman directed the award winning play My name is Rachel Corrie (2005) and the film and stage production of The Winter Guest (1995).
