Born in Croydon, Flowers had no formal art training. After completing her education she went to finishing school in Paris and worked as an au pair. She worked at Butlins and pursued some acting work but was unfulfilled. In 1952 she met Adrian Flowers a photographer and proposed to him. The couple married and moved to St Ives. Influenced by her husband's work in taking photographs of artists' works for exhibition catalogues she decided she wanted to open a Gallery of her own. Flowers opened her first gallery in 1970 above a grocery store in the heart of Chinatown, London. She focused on contemporary art and promoted lesser-known artists with her 'Artist for the Day' initiative where 10 well-known and established artists would pick new talent which she would generously exhibit for the day to shine a spotlight on them. This gesture helped many unknown artists to become recognised. Today Flowers Gallery represents more than 50 International artists and artist’s estates, working in a wide range of media. Over the 50 years since it was established, Flowers Gallery has put on over 900 exhibitions globally.
