James Loy MacMillan
(1959-), Composer and conductorSitter in 1 portrait
MacMillan worked as a lecturer and performer before making his name as the pre-eminent Scottish composer of his generation. After the successful premiere of Tryst (1990) he became Affiliate Composer of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. A Roman Catholic, many of MacMillan's works have a religious focus, including the percussion concerto Veni, veni, Emmanuel (1992), written for Dame Evelyn Glennie. Other works include his second opera The Sacrifice (2007) and the St John Passion (2008).
