Since moving to the UK from South Africa in 1950, Calvert has designed signage for roads, railways, airports, hospitals and military installations. She has produced stamps for the Royal Mail, signage for banks, and identities for Ryman stationers. She is also highly regarded as a teacher and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the University of the Arts in London. Calvert, who worked with the late Jock Kinneir, produced signage for use worldwide and made the roads readable with simple but effective roadside signs. Calvert is best known for the 'cow', 'horse', 'deer', 'children crossing' and 'men at work' signs.
