Sitter in 4 portraits
Born in Yorkshire, and brought up in Farnham, Surrey, Hawthorn was the son of a racing motor cyclist . His first chance at racing success came in 1952 when a family friend invited him to race their Cooper-Bristol. He became an overnight sensation with three wins at Goodwood that year. In 1953 he won the Grand Prix at Rheims but his 1955 his victory for Jaguar at Le Mans was overshadowed by a tragic crash killing eighty spectators. In 1958 he became the first British driver to become the Formula One world champion, finishing one point ahead of Stirling Moss. Shortly after announcing his retirement he was killed whilst racing against his friend's Mercedes on the Guildford by-pass in Surrey.
