Hampton had his debut at the Royal Court aged eighteen with his first play When did you last see my mother? (1966). After graduation from Oxford, from 1968 until 1970 he was the theatre's first resident dramatist. Other works performed there include The Philanthropist (1970) and adaptations of plays by Chekov. In 1985 he adapted Les Liaisons Dangereuses for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
