Sir Leslie Porter
(1920-2005), Businessman and President, Tesco PLCSitter in 1 portrait
Porter worked for his family's textile business in his late teens, before joining the 1st Battalion, The Rangers, KRRC, and serving in the Middle East, Greece, Crete, North Africa and Europe. In 1949 he married Shirley Cohen, daughter of the founder of Tesco, Jack Cohen. Ten years later he was made director of Tesco Stores, where he remained for over 30 years. As chairman of Tesco, from 1974 to 1985, Porter and managing director, Ian MacLaurin, transformed the company into the most successful British retailer of the late 20th century. Knighted in 1983.
