David Blair

(1932-1976), Ballet dancer

Noted for his virtuosity, Blair joined the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet in 1947 and three years later became a principal. Cranko created for him the roles of Captain Belaye in Pineapple Poll (1951) and the Prince in Prince of the Pagodas (1957). He transferred to Covent Garden in 1953 and established a successful partnership with Nerina. His created roles include Colas in Ashton's La Fille mal gardée (1960) and Mercutio in MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet (1965). During the 1960s he produced versions of the classics for several companies, including American Ballet Theatre.
