(1939-2004), Television and radio broadcaster and journalist

Disc Jockey and broadcaster. John Ravenscroft was born at Heswall near Liverpool and educated at Shrewsbury School, before moving to America in 1960, where he first worked as a DJ at the time of Beatlemania. Returning to London in 1967, Peel adopted his name whilst working for pirate station, Radio London broadcasting his show The Perfumed Garden. He joined the newly formed BBC Radio One in 1967; The John Peel Sessions helped launch the careers of many bands including T-Rex, The Clash, The Undertones, Pulp and The White Stripes. From 1998, Peel also presented Home Truths on Radio Four. His posthumous part autobiography, Margrave of the Marshes was published in 2005.
