Margaret Hodge took a degree in Economics at the London School of Economics and began her career as a teacher and market researcher. A prominent Labour Councillor for Islington (1973-94) and a senior consultant at Price Waterhouse (1992-4). Labour MP for Barking (since 1994); Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Education and Employment (1998-2001); Minister of State for Lifelong Learning and Higher Education (since 2001); Minister for Children, Young People and Families (2003-5). Appointed Minister of State at the Department for Work & Pensions with responsibility for Work in 2005.
