We have two amazing portraits of his. Wish we knew who the people were though. One is called "Mrs Dorothy Roberts". Would love to find her family.

Michael I have Charles William John Ambrose death as June 1924 at Pancras London from the ancestry site. I have Charles Edward Ambrose as having been born 1840/1841 in Tower Hamlets Shoreditch Middlesex. On the 1841 census he is 8 months old and living in New Gloucester Street Tower Hamlets. We, Michael, Eilidh and me would appear to all be cousins. I would be happy to get in contact with either or both of you.

Hello, I think I may have more information about Charles Ambrose. I was researching my family history and found that an ancestor of mine (my Great-Great-Great-Grandfather) was named Charles Edward Ambrose and was a portrait painter. Given the dates (and that there are not many other Charles Ambroses around) and his listed occupation... I believe this to be the same man. The census shows very, very few Charles Ambroses at this time, and he is the only one listed as an artist.

The 1861 Census shows Charles E Ambrose as being born ~1811 and with an Occupation of Portrait Painter. His birth town is listed as Bath in Somerset, and his residence at the time of the census as Lambeth, London. His wife's name is Agnes. The 1871 Census shows a different birth year ~1807, with all other information the same. (His occupation is removed on this one - perhaps he had retired by this time as a death certificate shows he died in 1874. This also shows his middle name was Edward.)
