Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens)

British singer-songwriter and folk musician, known during his early musical career by his stage name Cat Stevens. His song 'Matthew and Son' reached number two in the UK Singles Chart, his debut album reached the top 10 in the UK (1967). Other songs that he is famous for include 'The First Cut is the Deepest' and 'Wild World' which have been covered a multitude of times by various, diverse artists. After a bout of sickness and a period of self-reflection his music entered a transformative phase, his song-writing became more personal and spiritual. Following a near-death experience soon after in which he nearly drowned he continued the path of self-discovery by reading holy scriptures. He converted to Islam in December 1977, changing his name to Yusuf Islam and settling down to have a family. He has devoted himself to 'Dawah', studying and conveying the message of Islam. His commitment to humanitarian relief endeavours has made him a prominent figure in the British Muslim Community.
