Frances Hodgkins

(1869-1947), Painter

Frances Mary Hodgkins

Sitter in 1 portrait
Painter. Born in New Zealand and studied in Paris, Hodgkins alternated for much of her life between France and the studio she bought in St Ives in 1914. Hodgkins' prolific career spanned six decades but it was not until the 1930s that she began to forge a central place for herself in the mainstream of British modernism. She was elected to the influential Seven and Five Society and exhibited with them from 1929-34. Her first, highly acclaimed solo show at St George's Gallery in 1930 marked a watershed. She received valuable support at this crucial time from a group of friends and artists including Lett Haines, Cedric Morris and John Piper, who championed and collected her work.
