Sir Stanley Baker

Welsh-born actor, the son of a miner. Baker made his screen debut in 1943 as a teenager. Starred in many films in the 1950s including The Cruel Sea (1953), Hell below Zero (1954), A Hill in Korea (1956), and the most successful war film of its time, The Guns of Navarone (1961). Often cast as a working-class anti-hero in films such as Zulu (1963) and Robbery (1967). Critically acclaimed for his performance as an Oxford don in Accident (1967). Baker was knighted in 1976 a month before he died of lung cancer at 49.
