While studying languages at Oxford in 1897, Courtney met the suffragist Maude Royden and thereafter began a life dedicated to campaigning for women's rights. Her focus on pacifism following the outbreak of World War I caused conflicts with the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies and she resigned as secretary when the NUWSS founder Millicent Fawcett became focused on the war effort. One of the founders of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom in 1915, she took a hands-on role during the war, working in a Serbian Refugee colony in Corsica and relief missions in post-war Vienna. She continued to focus on resolutions for peace in 1945 and was awarded the UN peace medal in 1972.
