A well-established, well-respected artist of the 1950s, David Sylvester described Henderson as 'a seminal figure in post-war British art' and 'an artist who took photographs'. He was a founding member of the Independent Group in 1952, with which he regularly exhibited, notably in This Is Tomorrow at the Whitechapel Art Gallery (1956). His work later fell into obscurity but a revival of interest began with two 1977 exhibitions (at Kettle's Yard and the Anthony d'Offay Gallery) and culminated in a major touring retrospective and monograph in 2001. Nigel Henderson: Parallel of Life and Art covered his experimental works with photographs and collage, and portraits and documentary photographs in the East End.
