William Stuart Macpherson

(1901-1978), Dean of Lichfield

Educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge, he initially working as a teacher and also played rugby. Ordained in 1932 Macpherson started his new career as a curate in Yorkshire and then became a minor canon at Ripon Cathedral. In the second world war, he served as a Royal Naval chaplain on HMS Indomitable, and from 1954 to 1969 was Dean of Lichfield Cathedral, where he was instrumental in its restoration. He died in 1978 and his remains are buried in the graveyard of St John the Baptist, Hawkchurch, Devon where he spent his retirement years. His grave has the simple epithet: 'Priest'.
