British-born actor and comedian. In America from the age of four, he grew up in Cleveland, Ohio where at age ten he won a Chaplin-imitation contest. First made his name as a vaudeville and then radio star before making it into films. The Cat and the Canary (1939) was his first popular screen hit, which he followed with Road to Singapore (1940), the first of seven 'Road' films made with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. Awarded an honorary knighthood in 1998.
