The most commercially successful American film director in the history of cinema founded his own studio Dream Works in 1994. Had his first major success with Jaws (1975) and followed this with other blockbusters including Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and ET (1982). First won an Academy Award in 1994 for Schindler's List (1993) and in 1998 won five Academy Awards for Saving Private Ryan. Awarded an honorary knighthood in 2001 for a unique and outstanding contribution to international film.
