Andrew Wynford Davies

Born in Cardiff, Davies's success with the satire A Very Peculiar Practice (1986) convinced him to take up writing full time. He has become best known for his skillful adaptations of books for television productions including Middlemarch (1994), Pride and Prejudice (1995), Vanity Fair (1998), Take A Girl Like You (2000), Tipping the Velvet and Daniel Deronda (both 2002). Davies' fiction for children includes Conrad's War (1978) for which he won the Guardian Children's Fiction Award and the adventures of Marmalade Atkins (television series and books, 1980-1995).
