Sheina Macalister Marshall

(1896-1977), Marine zoologist

Sitter in 5 portraits
Suffering from rheumatic fever and often confined to bed as a child, Marshall's father encouraged her to read books on zoology and geology. After graduating in botany and zoology, she remained at Glasgow University on the Carnegie fellowship. Encouraged by John Kerr to join the marine station on the Isle of Cumbrae, Marshall joined the laboratory in 1922 and remained there till retirement. She studied marine food chains to better understand animal and plant plankton, specifically the crustacean Calanus. During World War II, she visited Britain's coast to find a substitute for the substance Agar, which had become scarce. Elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1963 and appointed OBE in 1966.
