Darling studied Law at Aberdeen University and became the MP for Edinburgh Central in 1987. When Labour came into power in 1997, Tony Blair appointed him Chief Secretary to the Treasury (1997-1998). He subsequently served as Secretary of State for Social Security (1998-2001), Secretary of State for the Department of Work and Pensions (2001-2002), Secretary of State for Transport (2002-2006) and Secretary of State for Scotland (2003-2006).
