Lord Falconer of Thoroton was appointed Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs and Lord Chancellor in 2003. Falconer was educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond, and Queens' College, Cambridge and was called to the Bar in 1974. He was appointed Solicitor General in May 1997 and served as Minister of State at the Cabinet Office (1988-2001), becoming Minister for Housing, Planning and Regeneration in 2001.
