Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy

(1892-1963), Prime Minister of Pakistan

Sitter in 1 portrait
Born in West Bengal, India, Suhrawardy studied at Oxford University after completing his master's degree in Calcutta. Called to the bar from Gray's Inn in 1918, he returned to India, practising as a barrister at Calcutta High Court. He joined Bengal's nationalist politics, establishing the first Independent Muslim Party. In a strategic move, he later merged his party with Jinnah's Muslim League Party which was gaining popularity. His political prowess became apparent when the Muslim League gained victory in 39 of 121 constituencies. He was Prime Minister of Pakistan between 12 September 1956 and 17 October 1957, during which time he sought to address economic disparities between East and West Pakistan and strengthen the armed forces. In foreign policy, he formed stronger ties with the United States. Faced with a backlash over some of his policies he was forced to resign on 10 October 1957.
