Bengali politician; Pakistan's third Prime Minister. Educated at the Presidency University in Calcutta, he began his political career as a supporter of the Muslim League, joining Prime Minister H. S. Suhrawardy's provincial cabinet of Bengal in the 1940s. Following the partition of India in 1947 he served as a foreign diplomat in Burma (1948), Canada (1949–52), and twice served in the United States. In 1953 he was recalled to Pakistan from the United States and replaced Nazimuddin as Prime Minister. Despite his popular policies and initiatives, he lost his support to then-acting Governor-General Iskander Mirza who re-appointed him as Pakistan Ambassador to the United States which he served until 1959.
