Sir (Herbert) Hamilton Harty

(1879-1941), Musician, composer and conductor

Sitter in 3 portraits
Born in Hillsborough, County Down, Harty initially followed in his father's footsteps by working as a church organist. After moving to England in 1901 he found success first as a conductor, receiving encouragement from the Hungarian-born conductor Hans Richter. As a composer, he is best remembered for his orchestral work, much of which was inspired by his Irish homeland, including With the Wild Geese (1910) and The Children of Lir (1939).
