Lt Col. Thomas Eustace Smith was Officer Commanding 15th (Isle of Man) Light Anti Aircraft Regiment during the 1st and 2nd Battles of El Alamein.- the highest scoring anti aircraft unit and purported to have shot down more enemy aircraft then any Royal Air Force unit.
After the war he returned to the family business Smiths Docks Ltd - shipbuilders - SouthBank, Middlesbrough on the River Tees where they built the first Container ship.
