Joan Alexandra McCordick

To whom it may concern,
I am writing to you about my maternal great-grandparents, Sir George Halsey Perley and Emily Colby (née White), Lady Perley. George Halsey Perley was a Canadian lumber merchant, politician and diplomat. He was first married to Annie Hespeler Bowlby, and their only surviving child was my grandmother, Ethel Lesa Perley-Robertson. Ethel had five children, the youngest of whom was my mother, Clair (Perley-Robertson) McCordick. Annie Bowlby died in 1910, when she and George were visiting London; she is buried in Ottawa. My grandmother would have been 22 at the time. In 1913, Sir George married Emily Colby White. They had no children, but Emily ("Milly") was by all accounts a warm and charming woman, and my mother loved her "Granty Perley" dearly. Sir George was still a sitting MP when he died in Ottawa in 1938; he was given a state funeral. Lady Emily Perley died in 1948. Sir George and Lady Perley lived in London from 1914 to 1922, where Sir George was, among other things, Canadian High Commissioner.
