My father was house manager for the Viscountess Bertie. She lived out her final years until her death in 1971 at Applemore House, Applemore, Dibden, Hampshire; we lived in Applemore Lodge, gifted to my father by the Viscountess. She was the daughter of a leather tanner; far from high born. She owned 9 cats and lived her life at the end eating meals from a saucepan.
