William Henry SITWELL, British Lieutenant- Colonel. Served Afghan Campaign,1880 (medal); battles of Atbara and Omdurman, Nile Expedition, 1899 (despatches, medal, Khedive’s medal, with 4 clasps, brevet of Lieutenant- Colonel); raised and commanded 22nd Battalion Mounted Infantry, and afterwards a mobile column of all arms till the end of the war (despatches, medal with 3 clasps, King’s medal with 2 clasps).
Background
SITWELL, William Henry was born on November 20, 1860. Son of late Major Francis Henry Massey Sitwell of Barmoor Castle, Northumberland.
Education
Harrow; Royal Military College Sandhurst.
Career
Joined 5th Fusiliers, 1880. Served Afghan Campaign,1880 (medal). Ashanti Expedition, 1895-1896 (star).
Nile Expeditions, 1897-1898. Severely wounded at Shebalia. Capture of Shendy; battles of Atbara and Omdurman, Nile Expedition, 1899 (despatches, medal, Khedive’s medal, with 4 clasps, brevet of Lieutenant- Colonel).
South Africa Campaign, 1900. Commanded two regiments of Mounted Infantry (despatches, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). South Africa Campaign, 1901-1902.
Raised and commanded 22nd Battalion Mounted Infantry, and afterwards a mobile column of all arms till the end of the war (despatches, medal with 3 clasps, King’s medal with 2 clasps). P.S.C. 1890.
D. A. Attorney - General 1895-1897. Assistant-Adjutant-General 1900.
Employed with Bechuanaland Border Police, 1891-1893. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1900; General Staff Officer, 1st Grade, 3rd (Lahore) Division, India.
