Sir David Julian Bintley

(1957-), Ballet dancer and choreographer; Director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet

Bintley joined the Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet in 1976 and established a reputation as an outstanding character dancer. He was particularly noted for his performances in Petrushka, as Widow Simone in La Fille mal gardée and an Ugly Sister in Cinderella. Encouraged to choreograph by Wright, his first professional ballet was The Outsider for Sadler's Wells. Resident choreographer at Covent Garden, 1986-93, he succeeded Wright as artistic director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet in 1995. Notable among his ballets are Galanteries (1986), Hobson's Choice (1989), 'Still Life' at the Penguin Café (1988), Tombeaux (1993) and Edward II (1995).
