Sir John Brian Pendry

(1943-), Physicist

Physicist. Pendry studied at Downing College, Cambridge, before beginning his career as a research student at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge (1966-69). Pendry was Head of the Department of Physics (1998-2001) at Imperial College, London and Principal of the Faculty of Physical Sciences (2001-2002). Pendry has worked extensively on electronic and structural properties of surfaces, developing the theory of low energy diffraction and of electronic surface states. Pendry was knighted for his services to science in 2004.
