He was an engineer running the Indian Telegraph Department, and later the Indo-European Telegraph Department for the India Office based in Tehran. This department was responsible for the telegraph system throughout India and the near –east (Iran / Mesopotamia). His Times obituary mentions the high efficiency of his department that saved lives by giving timely information of tribal or other uprisings.
